Job Summary

The Head of Legal and Corporate Relations is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the organization’s legal matters, compliance, and public-facing corporate relationships. This position requires a blend of legal expertise, strategic thinking, and strong communication skills to manage legal risks, ensure regulatory compliance, and build positive corporate relationships.

Job Description

  1. Legal Counsel: Provide expert legal advice and counsel to the Executive Management, senior management, and various business units on a wide range of legal issues, including commercial contracts, intellectual property, labor law, and litigation.
  2. Corporate Governance: Ensure the company’s corporate governance framework is robust and compliant with all relevant laws and regulations. Manage board and shareholder meeting logistics and prepare all necessary legal documentation.
  3. Contract Management: Oversee the review, negotiation, and drafting of all major contracts and legal agreements to protect the company’s interests.
  4. Regulatory Compliance: Monitor changes in laws and regulations that may affect the company’s operations. Develop and implement compliance programs to ensure adherence to all legal requirements.
  5. Corporate Relations: Manage and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including government bodies, regulatory agencies, host communities of mining clients and industry associations. Represent the company in public forums and negotiations and act as the primary liaison between the company and community representatives
  6. Risk Management: Identify and mitigate legal and regulatory risks. Develop strategies to prevent litigation and other legal challenges.
  7. Team Leadership: Provide leadership and strategic direction to a team of legal professionals and Corporate Relations team, ensuring alignment with the organization’s objectives.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or equivalent law degree from an accredited institution is required.
  • A minimum of 15 years of post-call experience in corporate law, with at least 7 years in a senior in-house or law firm leadership role.
  • Deep knowledge of corporate law, commercial law, and regulatory frameworks. Excellent drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills to effectively manage a team and interact with senior executives, external stakeholders, and the public.
  • The ability to provide strategic legal advice that supports business objectives while mitigating risk.
  • Unwavering integrity and a high ethical standard, as this role involves handling sensitive legal and corporate matters.
