Project Manager (Gold Mining)

Job Summary:

The Project Manager is responsible for the complete management of mining projects, ensuring they are executed safely, on schedule, within scope, and within budget. The role involves supervising all stages of project development—from exploration and feasibility studies to construction and production—while strictly adhering to environmental, safety, and regulatory standards. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership, technical, and stakeholder management skills and will play a key role in driving project success in line with the company’s strategic goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Project Planning & Execution
  2. Develop and implement detailed project plans covering scope, timelines, milestones, and deliverables.
  3. Coordinate project phases from early-stage exploration through to mine development and production.
  4. Monitor project progress and adjust plans as needed to meet changing conditions or objectives.
  • Financial Management
  • Prepare, manage, and track project budgets, ensuring cost control throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Analyze financial data, forecast expenditures, and provide regular financial reports to senior leadership.
  • Team Leadership & Coordination
  • Lead cross-functional teams, including engineers, geologists, contractors, and technical staff.
  • Foster collaboration, assign responsibilities, and ensure project team members are aligned with objectives.
  • Risk Management & Regulatory Compliance
  • Identify and assess operational, environmental, and financial risks.
  1. Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies.
  2. Ensure full compliance with all relevant local, national, and international mining laws, health and safety regulations, and environmental standards.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the company and stakeholders, including regulatory agencies, contractors, suppliers, and community representatives.
  • Provide regular progress reports, presentations, and updates to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Quality Assurance
  • Ensure all project outputs meet or exceed quality standards and regulatory requirements.
  1. Maintain accurate and up-to-date project documentation and technical records.
  • Strategic Contribution
  • Provide strategic input during project scoping and feasibility assessments.
  • Identify and implement best practices and process improvements to enhance project outcomes.
  • Align project objectives with broader organizational goals and operational strategies.

Qualifications & Skills:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geology, or a related field.
  2. An advanced degree (MBA, MSc) is an advantage.
  3. Project Management Certification (e.g., PMP, PRINCE2) is highly desirable.
  4. Minimum of 7–10 years’ experience managing large-scale mining or heavy industrial projects.
  5. Demonstrated experience in feasibility studies, mine construction, and operational ramp-up.
  6. Experience in mechanized underground or open-pit gold mining environments is a strong advantage.

Technical Skills:

  1. Solid knowledge of mining operations, engineering design principles, and environmental/safety regulations.
  2. Proficiency in project management tools and software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera, or similar).
  3. Familiarity with GIS, AutoCAD, or mine planning software is beneficial.

Soft Skills:

  1. Exceptional leadership and team management capabilities.
  2. Strong communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  3. High-level problem-solving, critical thinking, and strategic planning abilities.
  4. Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

Working Conditions:

  • Willingness to work in remote or field-based locations.
  • May involve extended hours and frequent travel to exploration or mining sites.
